Thoughts: Drawing Class

The first assignment was to make a drawing of anything we wished, in any medium, that exhibited our skills in drawing.

The second assignment was to rip up our drawings into pieces no bigger than 2"x 2" and collage the pieces together. Some chose to arrange the pieces in a way that looked "random," but considered. Others chose to put the pieces together in a way that would create another form.

The third assignment was to draw the collage that we made. Some drawings paid more attention to the edges of each individual piece while others had a strong emphasis on the image that the collage created.

I do not have preference to any method in particular. Besides experiencing a feeling of liberation after demolishing my drawing, what I got most out of the series of assignments is how differently people go about completing the same task and the choices that they carefully make. There was a variety of interpretations and it opened my mind up to a different thought process.

After thinking about the assignment as a whole, I was able to come up with a little hypothesis. The original drawing took 8 hours to complete to be handed in. The collaging took 1.5 hours. The drawing of the collage took 4.5 hours. Both drawings had the same information, for the most part. Why did the second drawing take nearly half the time? When breaking things down into parts, it is easier to control than attacking the image as a whole (with accuracy). I'm still thinking about it. If I ever get around to it, I'll post pictures of my work from the assignment.
